Artists visit and paint on location at Marin Organic farms and sell their work with a percentage going back to Marin Organic Loan Fund, to assist farmers directly in financial need. 2012 fundraising efforts will give to Marin Organic's Youth Field Studies Program.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comBlogger64125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5881882393940594505.post-70793519859011390262016-12-29T12:00:00.000-08:002020-02-04T14:45:35.024-08:00Art on the Farm on Hiatus - Please Continue to Support Our Artists and Other Local Farming EffortsArt on the Farm ended in 2015 when Marin Organic closed operation.
I waited until the last day here, and it finds me sick in bed without a physical voice, but I wanted to take a moment to write and honor some very special people who loved Marin, its landscape artists and organic farming. My hope is that we can come together in 2015 and have a group show to give back to these special people, perhaps even start a memorial exhibit in their names that would continue to honor them year after year.

Sandy Greenblat was a compassionate force in the Arts in Marin County, and responsible for the reorganization of Art Works Downtown in his final years, where I assisted with graphics and PR. I was able to witness, first hand, this extraordinarily committed soul, sweep in and sort through, by hand, over fifteen years of clutter. According to the Marin Horse Council, where he was a volunteer for many years, his motto was to "always leave things better when you left", and he certainly did so for the Arts Community in San Rafael. He organized the entire office where I worked, and lead the Board in hiring it's current Executive Director. Sandy was kind to everyone. Above all, he wanted the staff to get along with each other, a task I can say was not always easy, but his encouragement certainly helped me stay as long as I could and accomplish many projects to improve the publicity of AWD.
During Sandy's role as the Interim Director, he and his wife, Marilyn Greenblat, an award winning landscape painter, worked to design the building wide exhibit of Art on the Farm that raised money for Marin Organic 2012-2013. A superb mediator and leader, Sandy was able to navigate the stormy waters of an Art Center situated in an old, historic building that had years of frustration based on building code changes and fundraising needs. In the end, a very large, collaboration took place, in which all areas of the building were filled with art about farming in Marin County. The Marin History Museum shared past artifacts and the artists in their studios benefited from the traffic stream of new people through the building and new cafe. It was really a special exhibit for Art on the Farm, Marin Organic, and the community of San Rafael. We were very proud of that accomplishment, and it could not have been done with out the efforts of both Sandy and Marilyn.

Sandy was a horseman, and when working with him, I learned that he truly enjoyed assisting in trail building in Samuel P. Taylor and really adored being with horses. His Facebook photo showed him in a cowboy hat, and I affectionately referred to him as the "Art Cowboy". When I left AWD, I gave Sandy a painting of two horses by artist Margaret "Patti" Elliot, a Marin Organic producer, photographer and painter. I always hoped he would have this for years to come and get to ride horses more often after AWD reorganized. I have spent this year, really thinking about Sandy's passion and commitment to the Arts, but also, his love of horses. To read more about Sandy's amazing contributions to the Marin Horse Council, Trail Maps and more, please read the dedication to him in the Fall MHC newsletter here, or visit the Marin Horse Council website.

I would like to propose that Art on the Farm artists come together and paint a series of horse paintings to exhibit in 2015. "The Horse Show" can become our way of giving back to Sandy. Perhaps we can find a way to include some of the horse non-profits in Marin. In the spirit of Sandy's volunteer work, please do volunteer to help with this goal in 2015, by contributing your time, your organizational skills and/or your art work. If you have a horse or friends with horses, see if there are ways we could bring artists to visit and paint/photograph horses, or get out to favorite horse trails for art involved with this goal. Click here to send a quick note of your commitment and wish to participate in the show.
We also lost a very dear friend to Art on the Farm this Fall, rancher and producer at Point Reyes Vineyard, Sharon Doughty. Sharon was an amazing woman. I will never forget her voice on the phone when I would call to schedule an outing. "What do you need? and "Yes, we can do that" Were always her answers. She was so incredibly willing to help get artists out to enjoy West Marin that she and Steve hosted the Art on the Farm group at their vineyard and inns for several years. Many of the Art on the Farm artists got to know them personally and really loved our annual show at the Vineyard where we displayed some of the art on hay bales.

View from Point Reyes Vineyards at Sunset

When the weather was in climate and rainy for two years in a row, this unique outdoor venue was scratched, but we all benefited from some wonderful events there. Our group has never had a budget and always allowed all artists to participate for free, so the ability to rent a space or put up tents was never really something we wanted to do- we were trying to sell art and raise funds simply, not spend money. Sharon and Steve offered their summer cabin on Tomales Bay to us once a year for the artist to paint on the Bay. These amazing contributions from Sharon were always done with out question. The more people, the merrier. She never got frazzled or lost her cool. I am sorry I did not get to visit her one more time. I would like to pass on one of my paintings of her property to the family, and I welcome other artists from Art on the Farm to do the same.

So, as we move forward into 2015, I want to embrace Sandy's wish that "we all need to get along" as artists in Marin County, and Sharon's wish that "everyone is welcome" to enjoy the land that is West Marin and cherish it, preserve it and give back to Marin Organic and MALT. As we say goodbye to 2014, Sandy and Sharon, I ask that everyone who has benefited from their work and kindness give what they can now. Don't put it off. Sandy and Sharon did not put things off... they helped right away, whenever they could. You can do this right now by making a donation to Marin Organic, volunteering, or visiting Pt. Reyes Vineyards and telling the family "Thank you".
Among those noted were Nancy Thomson of Tiburon, Muriel Shcmalberg Ullman of Sausalito, and a new member, Nancy from Petaluma. It was a warm, pre-summer day; hot in the sun, but a little too cool in the shade- Good thing we had both. I was there with my "zen dog", Mesa, and we enjoyed the long walk down to the gardens from the upper lots. It's a special location, moving from Eucalyptus trees and forest out through the valley to the coast.

There was a morning Dharma Talk when we arrived, so we had to tiptoe past quietly. As some of us left, there was a work party going on in the afternoon.

Thank you to the managers at Green Gulch for letting us create in this peaceful spot for a day. I learned much from the signs of Buddhism around the property. We saw bikes, horses, families and day hikers. The Green Gulch Nursery offers organic plants and starts available for sale. There were many plants and they looked healthy and new. Cerini Ranch in Tomales, California is owned by the Doughty family, proprietors of the Pt. Reyes Vineyards and Winery on Rt. 1 overlooking Tomales Bay. This ranch is just North of Hog Island Oysters, and neighbors the Strauss Family Dairy.

This is a wonderful place to paint, with many acres of rolling hills,
clumps of gorgeous trees, and of course, many cows. I had the privilege
of painting there a few years ago with Art on the Farm. You may view additional photos of Cerini during our artist visit here, on the photo blog of Photographer, Ann Brooks.

Hello SPRING! Yes, we are still here. We were waiting for the rains to come and bring green to the farms and the hills. We are discussing the next steps for this group, and we have talked about creating a "Meetup" for Art on the Farm, like the North Bay Plein Air painters group uses. It seems easy for others to upload their photos and stay better connected, ride share, etc.... For example, they have 79 people RSVP'd to attend a paint-out in Healdsburg on Sunday, March 30th! We collaborated with them once before for our visit to Gospel Flat Farms this past summer. They posted our farm visit on their site, and more people showed up. Hoping they may let us do that again this year!

Please check back soon for new dates and places to visit. This year, due to the drought, we may have some restrictions on bathrooms and water use, so I would highly suggest people think about bringing their own water and using local public restrooms for their needs. Check back soon!

In the meantime, feel free to visit THE NEW WEBSITE at MarinOrganic.org and the individual producer websites, such as StempleCreek.com and cowtrackranch.com . We are still posting interesting news weekly on Twitter, so you may also wish to follow us there.
Happy New Year!

We want to take this opportunity to thank Marin Organic and Liana Orlandi, who organized and ran the recent online auction through Bidding for Good. As a first time effort, we feel it had a very good response as nine paintings from the Art on the Farm group were sold as well as additional local photography jewelery, lodging and dinner certificates for organic restaurants. We were very pleased with the collaboration with Marin Organic, and I hope they will consider working with us to grow this option for the future.

Congratulations to the following artists sold work in the auction:
Marin Organic has emailed the high bidders to connect directly with the artists in case they are still interested in purchasing the work. Thanks again, and we look forward to hopefully trying this again in the future.

We hope to schedule new artist visits to the farms in the Spring. In the meantime, pray for rain and do your favorite rain dances so our local farms will have grasses for the cattle and the produce will be plentiful.
At this time of year, we usually have our group show of our work to share our creations and good spirits while making a few dollars to fund our art and the projects of Marin Organic.

This year, the new Executive Director of Marin Organic, Jeffrey Westman, and one of their terrific volunteers on board, would like to offer an online auction via "Bidding for Good" with our art work for sale in lieu of a gallery show. This is an exciting opportunity to provide all of us with more exposure and possibility for sales to online members of Marin Organic that may have never had the opportunity to visit one of our shows in person.
Proprietor, Mickey Murch, and his extended family were on hand to greet
artists as they were picking produce and bringing it directly to the 24

The fog cleared to reveal Bolinas Ridge in the back ground and a sunny and bright glow of colored stripes emerged in the fields. Thank you to the Murch family for letting us enjoy this amazing day with you!

This was the greatest attendance day of "Art on the Farm" artists in recent history, and there were several new artists from the North Bay Plein Air group on site as well. A few in attendance were Larry Bryson, Donna Solin, Catherine Moreno, Diane Lewis Hull and her husband, Mark Monsarrat, Catherine Fasciato, Daphne Wallace Gerlach and many more. Here are a few photos of the day, with more to come!
Fragrant & Farm Fresh Lavender awaits!

We have a new website to show you from Cow Track Ranch, and we are delighted to be visiting Liz Daniels on Sunday, June 9th.

Please do put this one on your calendars! Cow Track Ranch is one of the favorite places to visit, partially for it's dramatic rolling hills that embrace the property, and in part for the rustic buildings, tractors, and gardens maintained by proprietor, Liz Daniels.
It has so much great info on their lavender products and more, plus the photos are marvelous. The property has a Bed and Breakfast on site, and is rented out frequently for one-of-a-kind, "Real Weddings".
Please sign the release to participate and sign up for our newsletter, below. Directions to Toluma will be emailed out to our list before May 5th. We may soon go to a "Meet up" type of scheduling this year, as some other plein air groups have become successful with this online program. If there is a volunteer interested in running the "Meet up" page for our group this year, please contact us. The fee seems to be $12. a month to use Meet up. Since our group has been traditionally free, we hesitate to move to this with out asking all if they would be willing to donate $1. a year or so to help defray costs. Perhaps a donation button on the site might work to cover the basic expenses.

Congratulations to the entire group for a successful fundraising exhibit at Art Works Downtown in 2012. Art Works Downtown sold 13 pieces of art from the exhibit, with a percentage going back to the Farm Field Studies Program for Marin Organic. The building-wide exhibit was very well received by the public and enjoyed during the holidays. Thank you to all the artists for contributing work and attending the events.

A pastel by Carol Allen sold last night at "Art on the Farm" at Art Works Downtown. The pastel speaks about eating organic & "farm to table".

Please visit the exhibit at Art Works Downtown before it ends, January 17. Just one more week! To date, 12 pieces have sold from this exhibit (10 from the main gallery, and 2 from the Marin Jewelers Guild walls).

Art Works Downtown is open today, Saturday, from 10am to 5pm (and I hear they have leftover food from last night's reception! : ) Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5881882393940594505.post-83372433201907873392012-11-29T15:34:00.001-08:002013-08-28T09:56:32.659-07:00Holiday Fundraising Exhibit for Marin Organic

We had a fantastic day at Liz Daniel's "Cow Track Ranch" in Nicasio. It was the day after a gorgeous wedding had taken place, and many of the decorations and flowers were still in place. Liz was so accommodating, and we were still able to visit all the nooks and crannies of her property.
I stopped at Nicasio Cheese Company on my way over, and purchased my lunch: a cooler of cheese, crackers, and drinks to enjoy through the early evening. While I was there, an entire family of cyclists had stopped in for a break. They were training for the Marin Century that took place the last weekend in August. I hope they enjoyed it!
There were over 20 artists out at Cow Track throughout the day this year. This is one of the best spots to visit because it is easy to get to and there are so many unique things to paint. Holsteins, Long-horn cattle, rolling hills, old tractors and barns, a pond, lots of gardens and plants, rock outcroppings and more.
Since 1998, artists from the Bay Area and beyond have joined to create art inspired by Marin Organic farms, and give a percentage of their sales back to the farmers.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5881882393940594505.post-76810658419722758742012-06-04T14:35:00.001-07:002012-06-04T17:36:20.139-07:00Toluma Farm 2012

Toluma Farms is a Marin County (Tomales) family owned Grade A dairy and organic farm, just twenty minutes west of Petaluma. They are developing a line of fine artisan hand crafted goat cheeses. In addition, Toluma supplies goat milk to Redwood Hill Farms of Sonoma County. An interesting fact about goat milk is that worldwide, more people drink goat's milk than cow's milk. Toluma's goat’s milk, like any good goat’s milk, has a delicious slightly sweet taste. The goats are milked twice a day and produce a gallon of milk each day which translates into one pound of cheese. They can identify every one of the 200 goats by name! They have Nubian, Saanen, Alpine, La Manchas and Oberhaslis goats at Toluma Farms.
The goats were so friendly. They paraded down a trail to meet me and my
sons, and the other artists. This is when I learned from Eric Butler, Herd Manager, that they all had
very cool names. This is a beautiful farm, not far from Dillon Beach.
My family ended up at the beach this day, but I am so glad we got to
come out and photograph and see the other artists hard at work and enjoying the gorgeous views. Hopefully, some of
the paintings and photographs from today will end up at our year end
exhibits that bring funds back to the farmers.

This year's second visit of the season brought a handful of artists out to Bolinas on a cool and foggy day in April.

Artist, Maud Zimmer was there to meet the proprietor of Blackberry Farm, Aggie Murch. Zimmer says that it was a lovely day, and Aggie brought out warm, cranberry-walnut cookies for all the artists at "just the right time".

"Aggie was wonderful to visit with and the beautiful home has lots of history, including an old rose bush; I wish that I could remember the name of it! Aggie was happy to see that someone painted the Buttercups all over the front lawn...(Maud). I am working on a painting of them too. Maud's painting featured the house. I hope to have a painting up and ready soon", says Gerlach.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5881882393940594505.post-83200975012623985032012-04-24T09:25:00.002-07:002012-04-24T09:33:13.700-07:00Cerini Ranch Visit 2012

Our first visit of 2012 brought our group out to Cerini Ranch, just North of Hog Island Oysters. It was a gorgeous day, with puffy clouds and sunshine. I opened up in the morning and put our signs out for the group. I also enjoyed bringing my 9 year old son, Blake, out to the farm to paint for the first time. He did a decent job painting, but mostly preferred playing iPad in the warm car, watching mom paint. It was nice to have him along for the visit.
She was a very nice hostess and came out to see what we were painting mid-day as she strolled the property for a walk. There were about 10 artists on the property throughout the day. We left by 4pm when Patti Elliot and Ann Brooks showed up for afternoon light. Ann has written a terrific blog post about her first time visit with "Art on the Farm".
